- Gas price a mile from home was $1.39
- Schools closed. At first, we would not come back until April 13. Now it is May 4th, but I'm betting the entire school year will be cancelled.
- Online school started on March 23.
- As a teacher the first week, we didn't have to collect grades. It was for participation and learning how to adjust to online learning. I'm expected to have 30 minutes of activities for the students per day, and that could be reading, assignments, or quizzes. Grades for secondary were due April 6. Most of my students participated, but I had 4 students that I had to give an "Incomplete". I've adjusted well to online teaching because I've been using Canvas all year. However, my colleagues are pretty lost. I've been helping them by creating tutorial videos and sending them links to online job aids. We have met using zoom to share our screens and show them how to use technology. I've been having weekly zoom meetings with my students Monday afternoons, and we play Kahoot games and Quizlet Live. I am supposed to be working from 8 to 4, but I'm answering emails outside of those times. I have students sharing devices and might be working on their school work after their parents are done working from home. It's survival mode for most.
- As a parent, my 4th-grade daughter is attending zoom meetings with her teachers daily and weekly with her specials teachers. She is also meeting with her dyslexia group two times a week. However, she is not going to be graded for the last grading period of the year. I didn't tell her that though. My 6th grader is having to do work for all his classes. He is playing his trumpet and doing P.E. (kind of) at home. He seems to finish everything in 2 hours, but I know he's not doing all of the work and thoroughly reading. I'm having to monitor his activities to make sure he is completing all his requirements. He's not understanding histograms, mode and plate technics. He's doing fine in reading though.
- Self-distancing measures on the rise.
- There is a limited number of people inside stores, therefore, lineups outside the store doors.
- Tape on the floors at grocery stores and others to help distance shoppers (6ft, soon to be 10ft) from each other.
- The grocery checkout looks like a bank now. The workers are walled in with glass to protect them from the virus.
- Panic buying sets in and we have no toilet paper, no disinfecting supplies, no paper towel no laundry soap, no hand sanitizer. Shelves are bare in the middle of March. It gets better towards the end of March, but you still can't find toilet paper.
- Non-essential stores and businesses mandated closed.
- Parks, trails, entire cities locked up.
- Children's outdoor play parks are closed. It's hard to get the kids outside. They just stay inside playing Roblox or Minecraft.
- March madness was cancelled, and the NBA never finished its 2019-2020 season.
- Concerts, tours, festivals, entertainment events - cancelled.
- Weddings, family celebrations, holiday gatherings - cancelled.
- Church had a drive-in service on March 22, and service has been online ever since.
- No gatherings of 50 or more, then 20 or more, now 5 or more.
- Don't socialize with anyone outside of your home.
- We are to distance from each other.
- Shortage of masks, gowns, gloves for our front-line workers.
- Shortage of ventilators for the critically ill.
- Manufacturers, distilleries and other businesses switch their lines to help make visors, masks, hand sanitizer and PPE.
- Government closes the border to all non-essential travel.
- Fines are established for breaking the rules.
- Stadiums and recreation facilities open up for the overflow of COVID-19 patients.
- Press conferences daily from the President. Daily updates on new cases, recoveries, and deaths.
- Government incentives to stay home.
- Barely anyone on the roads. There are fewer wrecks and traffic.
- People wearing masks and gloves outside.
- Essential service workers are terrified to go to work.
- Medical field workers are afraid to go home to their families.
My own reflection. I am actually enjoying the less stress. The positive things that have come out of this:
- Less stress
- Don't have to rush to be anywhere
- I don't have to wake up early (7:15 instead of 5:30)
- I don't have to wear makeup if I don't want to
- I'm working out more
- I'm talking to family and friends more
- I enjoy online teaching. I'm having fun making Nearpods and having time to plan better lessons.
- We have started investing money in the stock market since it's the lowest its been in years.
As of April 11, 2020, American is the epicenter for this virus with the most cases and deaths in the world.
